Dollar Tree Vase Makeover

I love pretty flowers. I mean who doesn’t, right? So, this past Mother’s Day I decided to run to the grocery store (super) last minute to see if they had any pretty flowers I could get for my mom and grandma. I already had a couple of other little gifts for each of them, but I thought it’d be nice to surprise them with flowers too!

To my surprise the grocery store had the most beautiful peonies! I have said for years that peonies are my favorite flower, but I’m honestly not even sure that I had ever seen them in person before. They are breathtakingly beautiful! I don’t know what your favorite flower is, but it should be these. They’re just that pretty! Look at them!

Anyways, so I brought home these gorgeous peonies, and some baby’s breath to use as filler. I planned to put them in some Dollar Tree vases I had bought for something else, but I decided that I wanted to dress up the vases a little bit. I didn’t have many supplies or a plan, and I only had about 10 minutes – so here’s what I came up with!

For the rounder dot vase (that’s the technical name ha!), I just tied 5 pieces of twine around the neck of the vase to represent me, my husband, and our 3 girls.

It took less than 1 minute to dress up that cute dot vase, and I think it really made a difference! But I want to focus on the other tall straight vase.

It turned out so cute, right?! And it was SO easy! It took me longer to gather the supplies and wait for the hot glue gun to heat up than it did to actually put it all together.

Supplies:

  • scissors
  • muslin fabric or linen ribbon that you can stamp on
  • wider ribbon to put behind the stamped strips – I used this lattice jute ribbon, but you could use a wide burlap ribbon, lace ribbon, or any other wide decorative ribbon that you have on hand. Here is a lattice jute ribbon from Amazon that is very similar, if not identical, to the one I got from Hobby Lobby. I also found this 3″ wide burlap ribbon from Amazon that would work great!
  • stamps – these are my absolute favorite alphabet stamps!
  • black ink pad – I used this one from Michaels, but this one from Amazon would work great too.
  • acrylic blocks – these are the ones I always use, but these are a good alternative from Amazon.
  • hot glue sticks and hot glue gun

Instructions:

  1. plug in your awesome hot glue gun so that it starts heating up while you are working
  2. cut strips of muslin fabric (I used muslin but you could use any light colored fabric or linen ribbon). Make sure your strips are wide enough to go around the vase, and tall enough for the stamps to fit.
  3. stamp your desired words on your muslin strips, making sure to stamp the words in the center of the strips
  4. cut the lattice jute ribbon (or whatever wide ribbon you decide to use) long enough to go around the vase
  5. use your hot glue gun to glue the lattice jute ribbon to the vase – I just put a few dots of hot glue on the vase where the ribbon overlapped so that it would hold the ribbon to itself and to the vase
  6. now put your stamped strips of fabric over the lattice jute ribbon, making sure the seam of where the lattice jute ribbon is glued is in the back (opposite of the stamped words)
  7. glue the strips of fabric together at the back where you glued the lattice jute ribbon
  8. ta-da! You’re done! Now arrange your flowers and put them in your adorable vase!

You could use this vase for tons of different occasions by just changing what you stamp on the strips of fabric. Here are a few ideas:

  • Happy Birthday
  • Congratulations
  • Happy Anniversary
  • Thank you
  • Get well soon
  • Thinking of you
