How to Hand Knit a Chunky Blanket

I’ve seen so many cute chunky knit blankets on Instagram, and I’ve been dying to get my hands on one. The only problem is the price tag on those adorable, fluffy, chunky knit blankets – they aren’t the cheapest! So of course I decided, why not just make one?!

This blanket took me only about an hour to make. This project is fun, quick, and easy, and it leaves you with the most gorgeous blanket! I mean, you can’t beat that right?

Supplies:

Below is the yarn I used for this blanket. It was on sale when I bought it, and since then it has been put on clearance and taken off the Michaels website. Sadly, I was told they would not be getting any more in stock.

BUT don’t worry! I have found some other great options that will still work well with hand knitting!

The yarn I used has shed some, so if you plan to just use the blanket for decoration, then a wool yarn is still a great option. But if you plan to use the blanket often I would recommend a non-wool yarn. Below are some great options!

*PLEASE READ* – I’ve received a lot of question about using wool yarn versus non-wool yarn. I just want to clarify that the yarn I recommend you use is the Bernat Big Blanket Yarn. This yarn is chunky and soft, and it does NOT shed. You can see a blanket made out of this yarn below. This blanket is used daily by my family and has held up beautifully! PLUS Michaels offers free same-day curbside pick up for online orders, as well as $9.99 same-day delivery!

    1. Oh no Susan! I just now found your comment. I’m so sorry! Washing instructions totally depend on the yarn you use. Each yarn has its own washing instructions on the label. The yarn I used suggests hand washing in warm water. Either way I would only hand wash it and not machine wash it. Hope this helps, and sorry again for the late response.

  1. Thank you so much for making this video!! I took a class and made one that I loved! Wanted to make more but didn’t want to forget any steps. Your video helped me remember what to do. 💕💕

    1. Hi Connie! I just found your comment. I’m so glad my video helped remind you of the steps! I’m still obsessed with hand knitting! I hope you and your family are staying safe and well. 🙂

  2. Just wanted to thank you for the instructional video about how to make a chunky blanket. Just finished mine and it looks great. Tried several other sites but they were hard to follow. Found yours and it was very user friendly. Again, thank you!

  3. Good
    Morning!

I am making your chunky blanket as we speak and I love it. As I look T finishing the blanket, I M wondering the finished knitting by going through two loops at a time, can that be done all the way around to give the blanket a finished look all the way around or you don’t suggest it?

    1. Wouldn’t that look so pretty! I’m not sure of a way to do that since there aren’t open loops on the sides to pull through. You’d be pulling the finished stitches through, and I’m thinking it could end up making the blanket look weird in spots. I’m not even sure if it can be done! I’ll have to look at my blanket and give it a try and see if it’s doable!

  4. I’m a little late, but just found this post and love you tutorial! What are the dimensions of your blanket and how many yards of yarn did you use?

  5. I am very new to this. So please for me being clueless. I have a question that is probably very stupid, but How do you connect your packs of yarn? Thank you for any help you could give me! I have been wanting to make me a big yarn blanket for a while.

    1. Not a stupid question at all. I just tie the ends of the skeins together in a knot and continue knitting. Let me know if you need more help!

  6. I cannot knit with needles, but I found your directions easy to follow. I made a throw and cushion for my granddaughter for Christmas. When my son saw it he asked me to make one for my daughter-in-law. They both loved their throws/blankets. If I can do this, anyone can! Thank you for the great instructions.

    1. Yay Shirley! I’m so glad you were able to make gorgeous blankets! Thank you for your sweet comment!

  7. I crochet and am hoping to be able to hand knit my daughter a blanket. I believe I can do this following your video. How do you count your rows? Is it the same way as in crochet? Otherwise, the only thing I can think of right now is to use stitch markers. 🤷‍♀️
    Thank you!

PS. You want me to list Website below. I am not tech savvy. I first saw your video through Pinterest and found myself on YouTube.

    1. Hi Evenlyn! I do count my rows the same as in crocheting. And you can definitely use a stitch marker to help out! I hope you enjoy hand knitting!
