How to Hand Knit a Chunky Heart Pillow

I’m sharing the easiest way to hand knit a chunky heart pillow, and below you’ll find patterns to hand knit the heart in two different sizes! This craft takes less than 30 minutes, and only uses 1 skein of yarn! 🙌🏼

Supplies:

  • Bernat Blanket Big – You can shop on Amazon here, or at Michaels here. (I used the color candy pink from the Mist-ical collection)
  • Poly-fil – You can shop Amazon here, or Michaels here.
  • stitch markers (optional)

Instructions: The video below shows me making the larger, 11″, heart pillow. This video is very thorough and walks you through the whole process step-by-step (normal speed) so that you can knit along with me if you’d like. This is a beginner level tutorial. Written patterns are below!

Patterns:

Small (7″) Heart Pillow:

  • chain stitch – 4 loops
  • 1st row – knit 4
  • 2nd row – knit 4
  • 3rd row – we are going to add 2 loops in this row. Add the first loop right away (it is now your new loop 1). Knit 2, then add another loop. Knit 2 more. You now have 6 loops. (Your new loops should be on the sides, and are now loop 1 and 4).
  • 4th row – knit 6
  • 5th row – we are going to add 2 more loops in this row. Add the first loop right away (it is now your new loop 1). Knit 3, then add another loop. Knit 3 more. You now have 8 loops. (Your new loops should still be on the sides, and are now loop 1 and 5).
  • 6th row – knit 8
  • With the heart laying on a flat surface, make sure the front is facing up, and the sides (where the new loops were added) are still on the sides. We are going to split the 4 loops on the left from the 4 loops on the right.
  • Each top hump of the heart is made out of two additional rows on each side.
  • On the LEFT side, (2 loops on top and 2 loops on the bottom) knit 4. Make sure you are not going around the whole heart, but instead going around just the 4 loops on the left. This will begin to separate the left side from the right.
  • Knit 4 more on the left side. (this is the second and final row of the left hump part of the heart).
  • Bind off. Left side is done.
  • Add new yarn on the right side (I show how to do this in the video).
  • Knit around the 4 loops on the right (2 on top, 2 on the bottom).
  • Knit 4 more.
  • Bind off.
  • Stuff pillow
  • Use the extra tail from where yarn was added (to close up the right top part of the heart) to bind up the hole in the center of the pillow, between the 2 humps.
  • Once the hole is closed, pull that yarn all the way down from the top center of the heart, down out the bottom hole of the heart.
  • Using the tail from the original chain stitch, bind up the bottom (shown in video).
  • Now use the two tails at the bottom of the heart to tie a knot, and hide the extra tails inside the pillow.
  • If you haven’t already done so, hide the tails from the top of the heart as well. You can tie a knot if you want to, but since you probably cinched it pretty tightly you can just tuck the extra yarn inside the heart.

Simplified pattern for small heart:

  • chain stitch – 4
  • knit 4
  • knit 4

  • knit 4 on left again, bind off.
  • knit 4 on right
  • knit 4 on right again, bind off.
  • close up all holes.
