Have you seen the new trend – stripping wood furniture with oven cleaner?! I first saw this idea from Natalie @vintageporch on Instagram, and after seeing all of her beautiful pieces I just had to try it out myself! I love the results so much that I wanted to share them with you! Look at the before and after pics of my cute antique sewing drawer – which is now my super cute napkin holder!

Watch the video below to learn how to use oven cleaner to strip wood!
I have to add a few disclaimers:
As mentioned in my video, this method worked great for me on some pieces, and not so well on other pieces of wood. This method works differently on different pieces of wood, depending on how the wood is stained and what kind of varnish is covering the stain. If there is a thick varnish on top of the stain, you might have to let the oven cleaner sit for longer before scrubbing, and you might have to reapply the oven cleaner mutliple times to break through the varnish.
If you are using this method on a special item that you are worried about messing up, I recommend you start by trying a tiny piece of wood in a spot that is unnoticeable (ie the back, underneath, side of the item, etc). Also, be extra careful with wood veneer. Do not let the wood sit under water for long amounts of time, and make sure you dry the wood off with a towel when you are done. I am not liable for any damage to your furniture or wood pieces.
Also, the oven cleaner I used is fume free, however I still recommend wearing a mask, as well as gloves and protective glasses. And of course do this outside, away from children and pets. You will want to lay down a tarp or some garbage bags as well, to protect your grass or ground.
Good luck! Go have some fun!
